Turning the Propane Tanks On & Off

The cabin has two propane tanks. The big one by the solar panels feeds the main house. The second, behind the generator shed, runs the generator. Opening both is one of the first things you do when you arrive, and closing both is one of the last things you do when the cabin closes.

Good to know

  • Main house tank: the large tank near the solar panels.
  • Generator tank: behind the generator shed. If it runs out on a cloudy day, the cabin can lose power completely.

Step by step

4 steps
  1. Open the main tank: lefty-loosey

Lift the cover on the main tank and turn the valve to the left (counterclockwise) to open it. That turns on the gas for the whole house.

  2. Check the gauge

While the cover is open, read the gauge. If it's below 20, call Eldrige to schedule a refill.

  3. Open the generator tank the same way

Behind the generator shed, open the cover on the second tank and turn the valve lefty-loosey.

  4. Check that gauge too

This tank powers the generator, so keep an eye on it. Below 20 means it's time to call for a refill.

Closing up for the season

  • This is one of the last things you do before leaving for the season.
  • Open the cover on each tank and turn the valve righty-tighty (clockwise) until it's closed.
  • Close the cover back up. See you next year.
