Turning On the Water Heater

One of the first things to do when opening up, right after the stove. The one rule: turn the water on first and let the tank fill before you light the water heater.

Before you start

  • The water is on and the tank has started filling.
  • The propane tank outside is on.

Step by step

4 steps
  1. Make sure the blue gas valve is parallel to the pipe

If the blue valve is turned across the pipe, the gas is off and the heater won't light. Turn it so the handle runs parallel to the pipe.

  2. Turn the red knob to PILOT

The arrow on the red dial will be pointing to OFF. Turn it one click so the arrow points to PILOT.

  3. Press the igniter until you hear a whoosh

This heater has a working automatic igniter. Press it repeatedly until you hear it go whoosh.

  4. Turn the red knob to HOT A (or HOT B)

Turn the dial from PILOT around to HOT A. If there are a lot of people taking showers, set it closer to HOT B. Somewhere between HOT and HOT B generally works fine.

Be careful

  • Don't light the water heater until the water is turned on and the tank is filling.
