Trash & Recycling

Trash gets picked up at the top of the driveway in summer. New York's recycling has to be sorted into separate clear bags. And whatever you do, don't leave garbage where the bears can get it. (Also: we don't burn trash on the beach.)

Good to know

  • Pickup: Monday and Thursday mornings, Memorial Day to Labor Day, at the top of the driveway.
  • Have the cans up there by 8 a.m. Never the night before, because of bears.
  • Recycling has to go in the special clear recycling bags, kept in the pantry.

Step by step

5 steps
  1. Between pickups, keep trash in the generator shed

Bag your garbage, put it in a trash can, and keep the can inside the generator shed. Cans left outside next to the shed get torn open by bears.

  2. Grab clear recycling bags from the pantry

Regular black or white garbage bags won't be taken. Use the clear recycling bags kept in the pantry.

  3. Sort the recycling, one bag per type

Clear plastic, opaque plastic, clear glass, colored glass, green glass (somehow different), aluminum cans, wax-finish cardboard like cereal boxes, standard corrugated cardboard, and paper. Each gets its own bag.

  4. On pickup mornings, bring it all up by 8

Monday or Thursday morning, carry the cans and the sorted recycling bags to the top of the driveway by 8 a.m. They take the recycling too.

  5. Off-season, leaving early, or leaving on a Sunday? Take it with you

Drop it at the dump off Route 8 on your way out and put each type in its labeled bin. The City of Speculator Municipal Building (down the road from Charlie John's toward Oak Mountain) also accepts trash left in front of its door.

Be careful

  • Bears: never leave trash out overnight or outside the generator shed. You'll spend your vacation picking diapers out of the woods.
