Firewood: Where's & How's

Where the firewood lives and how it rotates. New wood seasons for a full year on the generator shed porch before it moves to the two cabin porches. Always burn the oldest, most seasoned wood first.

Step by step

6 steps
  1. When the new load arrives, sort it

At the end of each season a truck drops off a big load of wood. First job: separate it into small wood and large wood.

  2. Stack it on the generator shed porch

The newly sorted wood goes on the generator shed porch, where it seasons for a whole year.

  3. At season's end, restock the cabin porches

Move last year's seasoned wood from the shed porch to the two cabin porches.

  4. Small wood goes to the driveway porch

The small wood is for the woodstoves. Stack it on the driveway porch.

  5. Large wood goes to the Lodge room porch

The large wood is for the Lodge fireplace. Stack it on the porch next to the Lodge room.

  6. Oldest wood in front, newest in back

On the porch, the most seasoned wood belongs in the first row. Shift what's left to the sides, put the wood coming from the shed porch in the back, then restock the front with the oldest wood.

Tips

  • Keep the smaller of the large logs on one side and the biggest on the other. Small logs get the Lodge fire going; the big ones keep it going.
  • Seasoned wood is for the cabin porches. Brand-new wood always goes to the generator shed porch first.
